Duties
1. Build and lead a dynamic, high performing team to acquire new protected areas for Australia’s National Reserve System.
2. Strengthen existing relationships and build new partnerships with  a range of stakeholders - non-government conservation organisations, local government authorities, private and indigenous landholders in peri-urban and rural Australia, industry, community groups and state, territory and Commonwealth government agencies.
3. Driving innovative approaches and new partnerships, initiate, develop and implement high level policies to increase Australia’s network of protected areas and its effective conservation management.
4. Advise on, implement and manage Australia’s collaborative protected areas scientific information system, policies and targets.
5. Contribute to wider landscape biodiversity conservation programs both internally within the portfolio and externally with partners.

Selection Criteria

1. Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to drive new agendas, to inspire individuals and teams, to manage projects, determine priorities, coordinate activities and achieve results.
2. Detailed knowledge and understanding of Australian and/or international developments in the establishment and management of protected areas, particularly related to biodiversity conservation.
3. A strategic thinker and problem solver, with the capacity to quickly understand business issues and provide leadership on strategies to achieve desired policy outcomes.  
4. Strong inter-personal and management skills, with a track record of cultivating productive working relationships, with external and internal stakeholders at all levels and experience in building and maintaining productive, dynamic teams and a positive work environment.
5. An influential communicator, sensitive to the needs of a wide range of audiences, with excellent written and verbal communications skills and the capacity to anticipate issues and respond appropriately.
6. Understanding of and commitment to Australian Public Service values and Australian Government policies on workplace diversity, workplace participation, occupational health and safety.
