The purpose of this role is to: • Undertake research in support of the eradication of Class 1 aquatic weeds. • Undertake research that aims to improve understanding of the impacts of aquatic weeds. • Undertake research leading to the development and refinement of integrated management of aquatic weeds in Queensland.
Job details
The duties/tasks/responsibilities required of this job are:
• Under supervision of the Senior Weed Scientist initiate and manage a research program in aquatic weed management.
• Design, conduct and analyse experiments to determine effective management methods for aquatic weeds.
• Contribute to the development and documentation of best practice management for priority aquatic weeds.
• Maintain professional expertise and knowledge in the field of integrated control of aquatic weeds.
• Co-ordinate and prioritise the activities of staff assigned to the research project to ensure that predetermined milestones are completed in a timely, appropriate and efficient manner.
• Develop performance plans with subordinate staff and identify their professional development needs.
• Prepare technical and scientific papers for publication in journals and present research findings in a variety of forums.
• Prepare detailed submissions to external funding bodies, advisory committees and the Land Protection Council.
• Liaise with scientific institutions, state, interstate and federal government departments, and collaborate with relevant institutions and major client groups.
• Ensure that the workplace is free of discrimination and harassment, that staff are treated fairly and equitably and that a safe and healthy work environment is maintained.
Some of the current priorities of this job are:
• Gathering scientific data required to assess both weed risk posed by emerging species and eradication feasibility.
• Determination of the ecological attributes (landscape to species level) and methodologies that may assist in refining aquatic weed surveillance programs.
• Ecological studies to contribute to the improvement of aquatic weed management programs, including the determination of life cycle stages most vulnerable to control measures.
• Development of effective herbicide and other control options for Class 1 aquatic weeds, such as alligator weed and Senegal tea.
Key skills, knowledge and experience required to undertake this job are:
• Proven ability in the design and conduct of ecological research related to the management of weeds and/or aquatic systems, as demonstrated by significant achievements.
• Publications in recognised scientific journals or a demonstrated ability to produce scientific manuscripts of a very high quality.
• Thorough knowledge of aquatic weed ecology and management practices.
• Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; including liaison, consultation and negotiation skills.
Mandatory Qualification required to do this job is:
• A Degree qualification in an area such as plant science, agricultural science, ecology or agreed equivalent as determined by the Director-General.
