To provide underpinning technical support services to Soil Processes through the collecting of gas, soil and plant samples from field and glasshouse experiments, sample preparation and extractions, performance of basic routine analysis, operation and maintenance of basic instruments, data entry and initial quality checking and management of the storage of samples, chemicals and consumables.

Responsibilities relating to the Selection Criteria:
• Collection of gas, soil and plant samples from field and glasshouse trials
• Preparation of reagents and solutions, involving the application of the principles and practice of weighing and the use of volumetric apparatus
• Preparation of soil, plant and water samples, including weighing and extraction
• Preparation of Chemwatch (safety) labels for solutions
• Maintain the appropriate Workplace Health and safety Standards for safe laboratory practice
• Apply good laboratory practice and an understanding of client and test requirements to ensure the best outcome from the procedures
• Operation of instruments such as digestion blocks, digital auto burettes, centrifuges, electronic balances, grinders, pH/EC analysers, UV/VIS spectrophotometers
• Calibration of equipment such as balances, ovens, burettes, volumetric flasks, UV/VIS spectrophotometer
• Maintenance of equipment such as grinding equipment, pH/EC analyser, UV/VIS spectrophotometer
• Troubleshoot and problem solve control charts
• Check transcription of data
• Prepare in-house soil, plant and water quality control samples
• Assist technical officers and senior staff when required
• Ensure Natural Resource Sciences Chemistry Centre quality system is adhered to
• Receive and label samples and allocate analyses to samples using the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS)
• Data entry into LIMS
• Prepare, maintain spreadsheets for laboratory applications
NOTE: NRW utilises Microsoft Office suite.
• Attend and actively contribute to Soil Processes meetings
• Advise technical officers and senior staff of issues of concern regarding quality and safety
• Advise technical officers and senior staff on consumables and equipment requirements for purchasing
• Prioritising tasks to ensure deadlines are met
• Supervise and provide training to peers, students and other NRW officers in the operation of basic laboratory equipment (such as ovens, balances, centrifuges and soil grinders)
