Nestled in the remote mountains that line the Shogawa River Valley, the historical town of Shirakawa-go is located in the picturesque heart of Japan. An area steeped in history and gorgeous autumn colours, this UNESCO World Heritage site is surrounded by alpine wilderness area, seems untouched by the modern world and holds remnants of the ancient, rural Japanese way of mountain life. Conservation Volunteers is seeking the assistance of volunteers to conduct vital conservation and heritage restoration projects within the Shirakawa-go region.
Activities will include:
Japan’s culture is rich and fascinating! Volunteers will experience the timeless and enchanting local culture living alongside the locals and enjoy guided walks throughout the area.
Project Dates: 21st October – 28th October 2010 (8 days / 7 nights).
The team of volunteers will be accompanied by our knowledgeable and highly experienced Conservation Volunteers Team Leader, and Japanese translator/eco tourism guide. Accommodation is in both Western style and traditional Japanese style rooms.
Project Price: $AUD2,500 and covers all meals (traditional Japanese cuisine), all project-related accommodation, pre-departure information, experienced guide, Japanese translator, project transport during the program. You also receive a 12-month membership to Conservation Volunteers, Australia’s leading environmental volunteering organisation, and a 12-month membership to the Australian Geographic Society, including a subscription to the exquisite Australian Geographic Journal.
