Provide leadership in delivering the Government’s strategic and operational environment protection and sustainability objectives including supporting best practice regulation and providing strategic policy advice
Key Responsibilities
1. Oversee administration of legislation including the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act, Environmental Assessment Act and associated procedures/regulations.
2. Provide leadership and coordination for developing options in relation to environmental protection and sustainability policy (including climate change) within the Natural Resources, Environment, the Arts and Sport (NRETAS) and across Government, and deliver effective high level advice on these matters.
3. Effectively represent the Northern Territory’s interests in other jurisdictions in relation to environmental protection and sustainability.
4. Manage staff and coordinate their work in carrying out regulatory and policy activities.
5. Financial management of the environmental assessment, policy and operations outputs.
6. Provision of high level advice to the Executive Director and participation in the effective management of the Division.
7. Negotiate with proponents, developers, government agencies and the public about environmental protection and sustainability matters.
Selection Criteria
Essential
1. Superior interpersonal and communication skills including persuasive, influential and highly developed negotiation skills.
2. Proven experience in delivering high level strategic policy advice.
3. Extensive experience in strategic planning, policy development and team and/or organisational management.
4. Thorough understanding of the processes involved in formulating high level advice to Government on complex and sensitive issues.
5. Senior level experience in environmental protection and management or related field.
6. Good knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements applicable to managing contemporary environmental and sustainability issues.
7. Conceptual, analytical and problem solving skills of a high order.
Highly Desirable
1. Understanding and appreciation of the environmental, social and economic policies and priorities of Government as they relate to environmental protection, sustainability and greenhouse/climate change matters.
2. Tertiary qualifications in environmental science/management or related field.
