Selection Criteria:
Selection Criterion 1 – Extensive knowledge and experience in remote sensing science for mapping and monitoring landscape attributes.
Selection Criterion 2 – Proven science team management skills and demonstrated ability in coordinating large remote sensing and GIS projects.
Selection Criterion 3 – Knowledge of current and likely future issues, legislation and associated policy and program responses for the delivery of high quality remote sensing services.
Selection Criterion 4 – High level oral and written communication skills and to develop collaborative links and partnerships with stakeholders.
Responsibilities relating to the Selection Criteria:
• Lead the development and implementation of innovative methods for mapping and monitoring land cover, land use and land management practices, and landscape processes using remote sensing and geographic information system (GIS) techniques.
• Direct research into the use of new satellite sensors and methods and ensure science quality of a team of remote sensing scientists, providing science guidance, supervision of research and provide peer review of scientific publications.
• Establish networks and collaborative projects with industry, tertiary institutions, clients and stakeholders to maintain interaction on state-wide, national and international developments in remote sensing.
• Provide expert consultancy and advice on the application of remote sensing and derived data to Departmental policy, compliance and regional staff; to other departments; to external clients such as regional natural resource management bodies and catchment management groups; and to other stakeholders.
• Maintain knowledge of developments in the latest remote sensing technology, image processing, GIS hardware and software, and large database file storage environments.
• Represent the Department and the State on industry, state, federal and regional bodies.
• Develop and implement project plans for mapping and monitoring activities within the Remote Sensing Centre such as the SLATS woody change detection, land use, woody structure and extent, groundcover, fire monitoring, water and weed mapping including data processing and field verification work schedules.
• Manage the work of science teams to produce extensive datasets and reports within critical deadlines.
• Provide leadership in the management of extensive scientific and/or spatially related data produced by the program, including the management of a large satellite data archive. This includes ensuring the accuracy, integrity, security, conventions and metadata of sensitive state-wide datasets.
