Warburton Rally Calls For Protection of Water Catchments from Logging
What: For the first time ever, 1,000 people are expected to march through the streets of Warburton. Concerned people from the local community, Yarra Ranges Shire, and from Melbourne will protest the woodchipping of the water supply of over four million people. The Rally will also highlight the massive Greenhouse Gas Emissions that occur each time Victora’s forests are logged. Formerly a timber community, Warburton residents now see ending logging of water catchments as a mandatory step in their transition to a sustainable community.
Rally Speakers Include:
Singer, Comedian & Local Resident Tracy Bartram to MC
‘Blue Heelers’ Star Julie Nihill
Wurundjeri elder Joy Wandin-Murphy
Yarra Ranges Mayor Tim Heenan & Cr Samantha Dunn
Folk Singer Bruce Watson
Parliamentary Representative Greg Barber
Musician Nicky Bomba to lead the parade
The Wilderness Society Forest Campaigner Luke Chamberlain
My Environment Campaigner Adam Menary
When: 11.45am Sunday 23rd November 2008
Where: Story Reserve Rotunda (next to the tennis courts) Warburton Hwy, Warburton. Melways Ref 290 A4. The Rally Will Proceed through Warburton, finishing behind Wild Thyme Café by the Yarra River.
Why: With water levels in our dams set to reach new lows this summer, it is vital we do everything we can to protect our water supplies. Water losses due to historical logging have already reached the equivalent of the Maroondah Dam, or of the water use of 100,000 people, or of the town of Ballarat. Government research has shown logging reduces water yield by up to 50%. Logging in these forests is the affecting the water supply of over four million people including residents of Melbourne, Warburton and other regional communities.
Australian National University’s recently released Green Carbon report highlights the massive greenhouse gas emissions that occur when we log our native forests. The Green Carbon report reveals that far more carbon is stored in our intact native forests than previously thought. Transitioning logging from native forests to plantations must occur to make the deep emissions cuts necessary combat dangerous climate change.
The Brumby government must act to safeguard our water supplies and our climate by protecting Victoria’s native forests.
