Master of Social Science (Environment and Planning)

The Master of Social Science (Environment and Planning) program (and its shorter versions, the Graduate Diploma in Environment and Planning and the Graduate Certificate in Environment and Planning) are situated in the School of Social Science and Planning at RMIT city campus. The School also runs undergraduate courses in Environment, Environment/Environmental Science and Planning.

The program is designed both for professional development and for entry into the rapidly expanding environment and planning fields. The program offers two streams - Environment and Planning. Students may choose either stream or a combination of courses from both streams. Planning stream This stream is accredited by the Planning Institute of Australia enabling students to become qualified in this area of considerable job opportunities. This stream examines new statutory planning techniques, planning and environmental law, strategic planning, sustainable city planning, planning history and theory, public policy development, rural and regional planning, and a range of courses examining current planning issues.Environment stream This stream focuses on environmental policy development and management. The stream emphasises natural resource policy and management, the concept of sustainability, globalisation, environmental policy at international, national, state and local levels, environmental management in industry, environmental effects statements, energy management, parks policy and management, water policy, and business-related environmental courses.

Course Structure

Courses within these programs are offered in a variety of modes in order to give access to students who may be working or who might otherwise be unable to attend classes. These modes include semester long, face-to-face classes (all in the evening Mon-Thurs), intensive mode (over two or three days), and via the internet. All core courses are offered in both face to face and internet mode.

Our Master of Social Science (Environment and Planning) involves successfully completing 12 units of 12 points each, which must include a minimum of 3 core courses. This program normally takes 18 months full time or 3 years part time.

Our Graduate Diploma in Environment and Planning involves successfully completing 8 units of 12 points each, which must include a minimum of 3 core courses. This program normally takes 1year full time or 2 years part time.

Our Graduate Certificate in Environment and Planning involves successfully completing 4 units of 12 points each, which must include a minimum of 2 core courses. This program normally takes 6 months full time or 1year part time.

Course Requirements

To enter the Master of Social Science (Environment and Planning) program applicants need to have successfully completed a degree, which need not be in a relevant field.
